America to Me, a 10-part documentary series from Emmy Award® - winning and Oscar®- nominated filmmaker Steve James and Participant Media follows students, teachers and administrators in suburban Chicago’s Oak Park and River Forest High School, one of the country’s highest performing and diverse public schools, over the course of a year, as they grapple with decades-long racial and educational inequities — in addition to the challenges that today’s teenagers face.

As part of our social marketing campaign and initiative to encourage students to share, in their own words, what it’s like to live and learn in America today, we launched the Share Your Voice contest for high school students. For a chance to win $25,000 scholarship students across the nation uploaded their own original spoken word poem to AmericaToMe.com.

STARZ talent Omari Hardwick and Joseph Sikora, and hip-hop artists Snoop Dogg and Vic Mensa also got involved, prompting their fans online to make their voices heard. After hundreds of submissions were received a panel of judges selected the top 5 entries. America then jumped in on the action and cast their votes to select the winner. The contest received coverage from HuffPost Black Voices, Ebony and the winner was featured in a local news station on-air story.

The contest received hundreds of entries and thousands of votes, and over 100,000 site visits helping to make America to Me one of the most impactful and community-building series of the year.
